When UK contact centre leaders evaluate cloud platforms, Amazon Connect and Five9 appear on almost every shortlist. Both are credible. Both handle voice and digital channels. Both have AI roadmaps. But they are built on fundamentally different philosophies, and that difference matters enormously when you are running a regulated operation, managing sensitive customer data under UK GDPR, or trying to deploy AI agents in production rather than in a proof-of-concept slide deck.

What Each Platform Actually Is

Amazon Connect is a cloud-native contact centre service built inside AWS. It is not a product that happens to run on AWS. It is AWS. Every component, from routing to speech analytics to AI agent orchestration, is an AWS service or integrates natively with one. That architecture has real consequences for cost, compliance, and capability. Five9 is a dedicated CCaaS (Contact Centre as a Service) vendor. It runs on a multi-tenant cloud infrastructure and offers a polished, pre-packaged experience with a strong ecosystem of pre-built integrations. It is designed to be deployed quickly by teams who want a turnkey solution.

Pricing: Consumption vs Subscription

This is where the two platforms diverge most sharply for UK buyers.

Amazon Connect charges per minute of usage. For inbound voice in the EU (London region), the rate is approximately $0.018 per minute. There are no per-seat licences. A 100-seat contact centre that runs at 60% occupancy pays for 60 agents worth of usage, not 100. For contact centres with variable demand, seasonal spikes, or a hybrid workforce, this model can reduce platform costs by 30 to 60% compared to seat-based pricing. Five9 operates on a per-seat, per-month subscription model. Enterprise tiers typically range from £90 to £180 per seat per month depending on the bundle. Amazon Connect runs natively in the AWS eu-west-2 (London) region. All call recordings, transcripts, contact trace records, and AI inference can be configured to stay within UK borders. You get the full AWS compliance portfolio: ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS Level 1, and alignment with FCA operational resilience requirements. Because everything sits inside your own AWS account, you own the data architecture. There is no shared tenant risk. Five9 offers EU data residency options, but the configuration requires careful validation. Their infrastructure is not single-tenant by default. For organisations under FCA supervision, PRA oversight, or CQC regulation, the shared-infrastructure model introduces questions that take time and legal resource to resolve. Five9 does hold ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certifications, but the burden of demonstrating data isolation falls on the customer.

Because these are all AWS services, you can build autonomous AI agents that access your internal knowledge bases, CRM systems, and operational data through Lambda functions and Bedrock agents. There are no middleware layers, no third-party AI vendors to contract with, and no data leaving your AWS environment.

Five9 has a broader library of pre-built, point-and-click integrations, particularly with Salesforce. For teams without in-house engineering capability, this is a genuine advantage. The trade-off is that pre-built connectors are less flexible when your business processes do not fit the standard template.

Implementation Timeline and Complexity

Amazon Connect requires engineering capability to deploy well. The platform is powerful precisely because it is configurable, but that configurability means a poorly designed deployment performs poorly. With the right team, a production-grade Amazon Connect environment with AI capabilities, compliance controls, and CRM integration takes 4 to 6 weeks to deploy. Without the right team, timelines stretch and technical debt accumulates. Five9 is faster to a basic deployment. A standard voice and digital channel setup with pre-built CRM connectors can be live in 2 to 4 weeks. The ceiling is lower, but the floor is higher for teams without cloud engineering resources.

The question is not which platform deploys faster. The question is which platform gives you the architecture you need for the next three years, not just the next three months.


Workforce Management and Reporting

Five9 includes more native workforce management (WFM) tooling out of the box, including scheduling, adherence, and forecasting. For contact centre operations teams who want a single-vendor WFM solution without additional integration work, this is a meaningful advantage. Amazon Connect integrates with third-party WFM platforms including Verint, NICE, and Calabrio. Amazon Connect also has its own forecasting and scheduling capability within the platform, which has matured significantly since 2022. For most UK operations above 50 seats, the native WFM capability is sufficient, and the integration path to enterprise WFM platforms is well-documented.
